As forms of artistic expression, both poetry and photography can convey a narrative or story without certainty or being merely descriptive. However both the poetic or photographic act are often still perceived as solitary pursuits, occurring in isolation from other creative acts.
Certainly, street photography and photojournalism have the most innate possibilities for stories, but they can just as easily serve only as evidence or anecdote. Think of photos from Iraq and Vietnam. And then think of photos from Barcelona or Rio. Photojournalism often offers an act of storytelling. Street photography’s narratives rely on either inherent mystery or on the viewer’s.
I recently published a new photo essay over on my Streets of Dublin website, and I thought that I would share the story behind it here, as well as some behind the scenes information.The Idea came about by accident really. I was in the area taking pictures for something else, and I realised that this amazing looking building was nearing completion, and my wife and co-editor on the Streets of.
The photo essay starts on the bridge and I continued making images as I walked back to the car. I know in the world of bridges, this is a modest one. Even the 360 Bridge in Austin is a lot larger. But I like how the 2nd Street Bridge fits into its environment. On the east side, we now have a towering wall of skyscrapers. In the west, we have the new Central Library and its nicely landscaped.
