Several Cambridge colleges run essay competitions related to Classics, for students in year 12. Whether you are planning to apply to Cambridge or not, we encourage you to get involved. Annual essay competition, giving pupils in Year 12 (or equivalent) an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills creatively by writing a short essay on a specific theme. The Staton Essay Prize focuses on the Humanities, reflecting our specialism in teaching and research.
Academic competitions for schools and colleges Several colleges and departments of the University of Oxford run competitions which are open to students from schools and colleges. Preparing an entry for one of these competitions is a valuable experience for academically motivated students, so please do encourage your students to enter.
The exceptional academic talent of Year 12 female students was celebrated by Newnham College at a prestigious ceremony in Cambridge for essay prize-winners. Newnham College’s annual essay prize competitions are designed to encourage ambitious female sixth-form students to explore university-level subjects and themes and to develop their independent research and writing skills.
High School Essay Contest. The PLATO High School Essay Contest awards will be given to the best philosophical essays written by high school students, in response to the year’s contest essay question. The 2017-2018 Essay Contest is closed. Please check back in September 2018 for next year’s contest question and directions.
The St John’s College Theology Essay Competition is open to all UK students currently studying in Year 12 and who will be starting Year 13 in September 2018. The competition is open to students regardless of whether they are currently studying Religious Studies (or equivalent) at A-level.
The Lord Toulson Essay Prize in Law, in honour of the late Lord Roger Toulson, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, is sponsored by Herbert Smith Freehills. It is intended to give students a chance to engage with important legal debates and to explore the kind of issues that they would be exposed to in a Cambridge law degree.
